Why is Cyberbullying Dangerous?

Involvement in cyberbullying whether as the victim or the bully can:

• expose you to physical harm
• get you in trouble with the police
• cause serious stress, depression and emotional harm
• affect your future with images and messages about you being up on the Internet for all to see

Here are the Danger Zones you should be aware of, and how to protect yourself:

A text or SMS isn't private - it can be saved and shared. It can also be taken out of context and upset unintentionally.

Nude texts (sexting) can be shared with others. If you don’t want the whole school to see it – don’t send it.

Providing your location via apps or in messages can share where you or your friends live, or your school location - meaning you could be physically followed.

Check your privacy settings - don’t make this info public.

What you share with others on social networks can be shared with people you don’t know.

Not everyone online is who they say they are, so be careful about what you post.

Your chats can be saved and shared by the other person. If your device is stolen your chats can be read by the thief.

Be careful about what you write as your user ID is generally publicly available.

Videos can be downloaded and saved - this includes anything you do whilst on a web-cam. They may not be deleted even if you think they have been.

Footage can be edited too, so be careful about what you film.

Webcam chats can be recorded, have screenshots taken and shared without your knowledge. Sometimes these videos are edited to depict something false to embarrass or blackmail.

Be careful what you do on a webcam, it's not always private.

Can be downloaded without your consent, shared, edited and posted elsewhere. Bullies may use images to discover where you live or go to school.

If a nude photo is taken of or shared with someone under 16, it’s illegal - you could be charged.

Many apps share your location without your knowledge and lack privacy settings so that unknown users can contact you.

Be on high alert with apps and what info you share on them.
